December 2020: Smoking Gun Coffee Roasters
Secret Sip Coffee Club was ecstatic to close out 2020 with a “bang” through the incredibly talented team of our December secret roasting partner. Nestled south east Vancouver, in the picturesque city of Abbotsford, British Colombia, adjacent to the Canada–United States border and the mighty Fraser Valley lies the renowned and decorated coffee competition proprietor and talented team of coffee aficionados that comprise Smoking Gun Coffee Roasters.
Smoking Gun (SG) coffee was created out of a passion and interest in coffee, and has grown into something completely unexpected. SG endeavours to tell the story of coffee from around the world, roasting in a style to allow the coffee to express itself through its individual flavor profile and differentiate itself from other beans and origins. Small batch roasting allows SG to ensure high quality, optimal freshness, and frequent rotation and release to expand and develop the experience of consumers. SG is passionate about developing community, collaboration, and great coffee.
Moreover, the team at Secret Sip Coffee Club was even more impressed at Smoking Gun’s lengthy efforts to work intimately with several importers who ensure fair and equitable trade with coffee producers around the world, focusing on eliminating poverty at origin. SG sources traceable coffees from small farmers, and utilizes direct trade relationships between the farmers and their suppliers to ensures ethical farming practices are observed, coffee pricing is fair and cooperative, and investment into the development of small farms is made.
December’s secret roast was Smoking Gun’s fabled flagship espresso known as the Show Pony, which was crafted to flamboyantly exude a creamy familiarity with a vibrant “kick”. As Brandon the owner indicates “We landed on a blend of washed Colombian, Honduran, and natural Ethiopian codes, resulting in a rich and sweet shot with a bright fruity punch”. The abundant notes of milk chocolate, hints of creamy caramel, and exotic tangerine finish paralyzed our palettes with jubilance.
